The Children's Heart Center

Dr. Cyrus Yau

Dr. Cyrus YauFew can say they knew they wanted to be a doctor since they were 5 years old. But time spent in the hospital for a rare syndrome called Guillain-Barre Syndrome left an indelible mark on me as a child, and to this day, it fuels my fascination with the human body and how it heals.

I attended the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) at Brown University, a combined 8-year college/medical school program. While studying there, I discovered a deep fascination with the developing heart that led me to pursue a career in congenital cardiology. At the same time, I began to recognize that our health care system is woefully inadequate at providing a bridge between pediatric and adult care, especially with the care of adults with congenital heart disease. To meet this growing challenge, I decided to complete a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), followed by a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

My family was very fortunate to have found our way to the Pioneer Valley after fellowship (I grew up in New York and my wife, Sara, grew up around Boston), when I joined the Children’s Heart Center.

Here at the Children’s Heart Center, I am blessed to be able to care for both children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. My focus on transitional care means that I ensure that children are educated from a young age about their specific heart issues. I believe that good health means having a good understanding of what makes us healthy. Through lifelong education and empowerment, I hope to instill in each patient a sense of ownership over their own hearts that extends into adulthood.

I feel extremely privileged to be able to care for you and your family, and thanks in advance for allowing me to be part of your lives.
